Being an Administrator of any forum requires certain qualities in order to be successful.
It`s never easy running a forum. Forums are made up of members. Members are of course people. And whether they are names on the Internet, or as in the normal walks of life, people are all different. We all have our own personalities and characteristics, even foibles, and a forum too takes on a certain `character.` I can think of half a dozen forums which all deal pretty much with the same topics, yet each of them are different in some ways. Some are more aggressive than others. Some are `laid back` and relaxed. Some are known for being `helpful.` It all comes down to the members, as the forum is a reflection of them.
Administrating a forum, therefore, requires a sense of humor, patience, and understanding. Get things wrong and it could mean losing proper control of the board. Or, members no longer liking what they see, and deserting the place. A good forum needs a mix of longer established members who've got some experience under their belts, and newer ones who are eager to learn, to impart knowledge, and to question. A good forum administrator has to be able to delegate. Delegate to whom? To moderators who have been taken on to help deal with problems, remove spam, answer members` questions, move threads over from one folder to another, and quite a bit more besides. The administrator also gets involved in doing these things of course, but he can`t be on the forum all time - even they need sleep. So, an admin needs to create activity by starting threads, replying to posts, looking after mods (and mods don`t always see eye to eye all the time)- so a peacemaking role is sometimes also involved.
Then there is the forum itself. A forum never stands still. It evolves. The chances are that the forum you see now isn't exactly the same as it was say 12 months ago. Why? Well, what was topical at one time may no longer be. Over time there may be less interest shown. If a folder is underused, it doesn't look good to forum users, and is literally a waste of space. Therefore, it needs to be combined with another folder, or even removed altogether. On the other hand, new topics come up, and probably members would appreciate a folder set up for the purpose of discussion on that subject. And this is where a good admin has his finger on the pulse. He is quick to spot opportunities to keep existing members happy, and to get new ones joining the forum. Members want activity, and if the folders are on topics of real interest then they will be active.
With creating threads, posting, looking after moderators, dealing with members` complaints, looking after possible advertising on the forum, and promotion of the forum, the life of a forum administrator is a busy one. But if handled in the right way, it can be very enjoyable and rewarding.
